You Are Not A Fruit Fly

Fruit fly

Do you know what the average life span is of a fruit fly?

Our guess was 24 hours, but a fruit fly can actually live for 40-50 days. We tell you this because none of us want to live just 40-50 days. The timeline for your financial goals is probably also significantly longer than that as well. If our lives were wrapped up in that short of a time frame, we would do a lot of things differently wouldn’t we?

Yet, it seems pundits and the markets are telling us lately that our lives will be determined by what has happened over the last couple of weeks?

But, you are not a fruit fly!

Do you remember March 11, 2020? That was the day the world shut down because of COVID-19. The markets lost 30% in 20 days, and we all believed that the world as we knew it was no longer. It was also during this time that those same pundits who are now talking about how life-defining the last few weeks have been were talking about the Great Depression of 1929 and unemployment getting as high as 50%. We have to admit that many of us firmly believed that we were entering into a depression since the world was not moving – but we didn’t. The markets actually recovered those losses by May 2020 and were actually up almost 8% by the end of 2020.

Since 2006 Fulcrum Wealth Advisors has designed portfolios that will account for market movements like we are seeing now, as well as seek opportunities outside the market. We do this so that the market will never fully dictate your outcome.

You will dictate your outcome.

In fact, we have been making adjustments to our clients’ market-based accounts since February, and by March 29 our clients were at their lowest equity exposure. This is what our clients hired us to do – because they are not a fruit fly.

When the markets change, we will change as well regardless of it going up or down. We will not be like many in our industry, who are telling investors to hold the line, that markets always recover, and to never do anything (even though doing nothing is something, just not always the smartest thing).

If you spend your days watching or listening to the news pundits, we suggest you stop. They are paid to do this and will only cause you stress and anxiety. Go for a walk, read a book, watch a movie, or give us a call.

You are not a fruit fly!
